Westerville softens its own water. That changes what your plumbing needs.

Westerville is the one city on our list where we routinely talk homeowners out of buying something. The reason is the water plant.

Westerville operates its own Ohio EPA-licensed treatment plant, drawing from Alum Creek and running a lime-softening process at a capacity in the region of 7.5 million gallons a day, along with fluoridation, phosphate corrosion control and granular activated carbon filtration. The practical result is water delivered at roughly 125 milligrams per litre, about seven grains per gallon - already softened before it reaches your meter. So when a salesman tells a Westerville homeowner they need a whole-house softener, the honest answer is usually no. Adding a second softening stage to water the city has already treated mostly buys you a salt bill. The conversation worth having here is different: how the city's corrosion-control chemistry interacts with older supply lines, how seasonal variation shows up, and how to look after the equipment you have.

The other Westerville fact is that there are two of them. The Uptown and State Street core and the surrounding 1920s to 1950s neighborhoods are old-house territory - older supply lines, cast-iron drains, mature trees over the laterals, and Otterbein-area rentals and duplexes with landlord-grade fixtures that turn over with the tenants. North of that, the 43082 side reaches into Delaware County, where 1990s through 2010s subdivisions are now mid-life and failing on a new-build schedule rather than an old-house one. The county line is not cosmetic either: which county an address sits in affects permitting and utility jurisdiction, and it is worth establishing before work starts.
